  • Use Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer. Press R to repair a Windows installation, log on to your current Windows installation (enter the administrator password if prompted to do so)
  • Type the following commands, one by one, press ENTER after each command:

    • cd\windows\system32\config
    • ren system system.old
    • ren software software.old
    • ren SAM SAM.old
    • ren security security.old
    • ren default default.old
    • copy drive on which Windows is installed:\windows\repair\system
    • copy drive on which Windows is installed:\windows\repair\software
    • copy drive on which Windows is installed:\windows\repair\SAM
    • copy drive on which Windows is installed:\windows\repair\security
    • copy drive on which Windows is installed:\windows\repair\default

After each copy command you’ll be displayed the “1 file(s) copied”.

  • Type exit and press ENTER
  • Restart Windows and log on as Administrator. Screen resolution and color depth may be set to a very low level and look unusual, that’s normal..
  • Open Registry Editor (On the Start menu click Run, type regedit in the Open box and click OK).
  • Click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key and on the File menu then choose Load Hive.
  • Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder and open click System.old file
  • Type test In the Key Name box and click OK. This action will load the original Windows installation System hive as a subkey

of the current HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key named “test”.

  • Click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\test\ControlSet001\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

  • In the right window of Registry Editor, click LowerFilters, and then choose Delete on the Edit menu. When prompted to confirm deletion click Yes.

  • Click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\test\ControlSet001\Control\Class{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • In the right window of Registry Editor, double-click UpperFilters.
  • Delete the PrtSeqRd entry In the** Value** data box and confirm deletion by clicking OK. When prompted to delete the empty string, click OK.
  • Click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\test\ControlSet001\Services. Change to to 4 the Start value of the services corresponding to the registry subkeys listed below.

To do so, choose a subkey, double-click on Start in the right window of Registry Editor, type 4 in the Value data box, and then click OK to confirm the change. The subkeys: Cdr4xp, Cdralw2k, cdudf_xp, dvd2K, mmc2K, PrtSeqRd, pwd2K, UdfReadr_xp.

  • Now return to step 9. You’ll have to locate all the other registry keys named according to ControlSet00x pattern (like ControlSet002 or ControlSet003)

under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\test\ registry key.

  • Unload the System.old registry hive (Click test and on the File menu choose Unload Hive). When prompted to confirm the unloading of the test key and all its subkeys click YES.
  • Quit Registry Editor. Now you’ll have to reload the original registry System hive.
  • Use Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer. Press R to repair a Windows installation, log on to your current Windows installation (enter the administrator password if promted to do so)
  • Type chdir system32\config at the C:\Windows prompt and press ENTER to change to the Windows\System32\Config folder
  • Type ren system system.xxx, and then press ENTER.
  • Type ren system.old system, and then press ENTER.
  • Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit the recovery console and restart Windows.
